A pearl can be used in many forms of jewelry. Like a gemstone it can be mounted using prongs or clips, but a pearl also has the advantage of being able to be pierced. That is, it can have a hole drilled through it so that it can be strung like a bead. As a result, we get the most ubiquitous of pearl jewels, the pearl necklace. However pearls are used in every other form of jewelry as well.

The shape of a pearl often determines they type of jewelry it will wind up in. The more round pearls are used for necklaces and bracelets. Button pearls, those with one side tending to be flat more often are used in pendants, rings, and stud earrings where the flat side can be hidden. Tear drop shaped pearls tend to be used in pendants, as the center piece of a necklace, or for dangling earrings.
